The Birds Gallery

Sandhill cranes at dusk

During the autumn, sandhill cranes migrate from their northern Canadian breeding grounds to overwinter in southern USA, Mexico etc. On their way, they stop off for a few days in Indiana. During they day they gorge themselves on corn spilled during the harvest and at night they make their way to roost at the Jasper / Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Preserve, where this picture was taken. On the evening I was there, I was fortunate enough to witness the birds coming in during a sunset that was almost surreal.
