The Insects Gallery

Bush cricket

Because of its camouflage, this chap gave me the fright of my life. I was in Malawi to collect samples of African Cassava Mosaic Virus for the research I was doing at the time (see the Biography link if you need further details). In fact, the mottled symptoms of the leaves in this shot are the caused by this virus. I was turning the leaves over carefully, looking for whiteflies, the tiny insects that transmit the virus, and this huge bush cricket popped its head up. Yes, I leapt back a few feet!
